tataḥ prasravaṇaṅ śailaṅ tē gatvā citrakānanam | praṇamya śirasā rāmaṅ lakṣmaṇaṅ ca mahābalam || 1 yuvarājaṅ puraskṛtya sugrīvamabhivādya ca | pravṛttimatha sītāyāḥ pravaktumupacakramuḥ || 2
Then, having gone to Mount Prasravana, which is adorned with beautiful forests, and having bowed their heads to Rama and the mighty Lakshmana, and having placed the Crown Prince (Angada) in front and greeted Sugriva, they began to tell the news of Sita. (1 - 2)
rāvaṇāntaḥ purē rōdhaṅ rākṣasībhiśca tarjanam | rāmē samanurāgaṅ ca yaścāyaṅ samayaḥ kṛtaḥ || 3 ētadākhyānti tē sarvē harayō rāmasannidhau | vaidēhīmakṣatāṅ śrutvā rāmastūttaramabravīt || 4
All those monkeys reported this in the presence of Rama: the confinement in Ravana's inner palace, the threats by the female Rakshasas, her steadfast devotion to Rama, and the period of time (ultimatum) that was set. And having heard that Vaidehi was unharmed, Rama then spoke a reply. (3 - 4)
kva sītā vartatē dēvī kathaṅ ca mayi vartatē | ētanmē sarvamākhyāta vaidēhīṅ prati vānarāḥ || 5
"Where does the Goddess Sita reside, and what is her state of mind regarding me? O Vanaras, tell me everything concerning Vaidehi." (5)
rāmasya gaditaṅ śrutvā harayō rāmasannidhau | cōdayanti hanūmantaṅ sītāvṛttāntakōvidam || 6
Having heard the words spoken by Rama, the vanaras present there prompted Hanuman, the expert in Sita's full account. (6)
śrutvā tu vacanaṅ tēṣāṅ hanumānmārutātmajaḥ | praṇamya śirasā dēvyai sītāyai tāṅ diśaṅ prati | uvāca vākyaṅ vākyajñassītāyā darśanaṅ yathā || 7
Hearing their words, Hanuman, the son of the Wind-God, bowed his head toward that direction where the Devi Sita was, and then, being eloquent in speech, he began to speak the full account of how he saw Sita. (7)
taṁ maṇiṁ kāṁcanaṁ divyaṁ dīpyamānaṁ svatējasā | datvā rāmāya hanumān tataḥ prāṁjalirabravīt || 8
Hanuman gave that divine, golden jewel, cūḍāmaṇi, which was shining with its own brilliance, to Rama, and then, standing with folded hands, he spoke. (8)
samudraṅ laṅghayitvāhaṅ śatayōjanamāyatam | agacchaṅ jānakīṅ sītāṅ mārgamāṇō didṛkṣayā || 9
"Having leaped across the ocean, which stretched for a hundred yojanas, I went searching with the desire to see daughter of Janaka, Sita." (9)
tatra laṅkēti nagarī rāvaṇasya durātmanaḥ | dakṣiṇasya samudrasya tīrē vasati dakṣiṇē | tatra dṛṣṭā mayā sītā rāvaṇāntaḥ purē satī || 10
"There is a city named Lanka, belonging to the evil-minded Ravana, situated on the southern shore of the southern ocean. There, I saw Sita, the chaste woman, within Ravana's inner palace." (10)
sannyasya tvayi jīvantī rāmā rāma manōratham | dṛṣṭā mē rākṣasīmadhyē tarjyamānā muhurmuhuḥ || 11
rākṣasībhirvirūpābhī rakṣitā pramadāvanē | duḥkha māsādyatē dēvī tathā.duḥkhōcitā sat || 12
"O Rama, the beautiful Sita, though alive, has completely placed her life's hope in you. I saw her amidst the Rakshasis, who were threatening her repeatedly. The Goddess, guarded by hideous Rakshasis in the Pramadavana (pleasure grove), is enduring great sorrow, though she is truly deserving of happiness." (11- 12)
rāvaṇāntaḥ purē ruddhā rākṣasībhi ssurakṣitā | ēkavēṇīdharā dīnā tvayi cintāparāyaṇā || 13
"Confined in Ravana's inner palace, well-guarded by female Rakshasas. Wearing a single braid, sorrowful, and intensely devoted to thoughts of you." (13)
adhaḥśayyā vivarṇāṅgī padminīva himāgamē | rāvaṇādvinivṛttārthā martavyakṛtaniścayā || 14
"She lies on the bare ground, her body pale, like a lotus plant struck by the frost of winter. Her mind is completely turned away from Ravana, and she has made the firm resolve to die." (14)
dēvī kathañcitkākutstha tvanmanā mārgitā mayā | ikṣvākuvaṅśavikhyātiṅ śanaiḥ kīrtayatānagha || 15
"O Kakutstha (Rama), somehow the Goddess, whose mind is fixed on you, was found by me, after I slowly proclaimed the fame of the Ikshvaku race." (15)
sā mayā naraśārdūla viśvāsamupapāditā | tata ssambhāṣitā dēvī sarvamarthaṅ ca darśitā || 16
"O Rama, she (Sita) was made to trust me. Then Devi was spoken to, and the entire situation was explained (to her)." (16)
rāmasugrīvasakhyaṅ ca śrutvā prītimupāgatā | niyata ssamudācārō bhaktiścāsyāstathā tvayi || 17
"Having heard of the alliance between Rama and Sugriva, she became filled with joy. Her proper conduct is firm/steadfast, and so is her devotion to you." (17)
ēvaṅ mayā mahābhāgā dṛṣṭā janakanandinī | ugrēṇa tapasā yuktā tvadbhaktyā puruṣarṣabha || 18
"O Rama, thus I saw the illustrious daughter of Janaka (Sita); she is endowed with severe austerity and steadfast devotion to you." (18)
abhijñānaṅ ca mē dattaṅ yathā vṛttaṅ tavāntikē | citrakūṭē mahāprājña vāyasaṅ prati rāghava || 19
"And a token (of recognition) has been given to me, concerning the incident with the crow that took place near you in Chitrakuta, O most wise Raghava." (19)
vijñāpyaśca naravyāghrō rāmō vāyusuta tvayā | akhilēnēha yaddhṛṣṭamiti māmāha jānakī || 20
"Hanuman, you must inform Rama, the best of men. Janaki told me, 'Tell him everything that has been seen here in full.'" (20)
ayaṅ cāsmai pradātavyō yatnātsuparirakṣitaḥ | bruvatā vacanānyēvaṅ sugrīvasyōpaśṛṇvataḥ || 21
"And this token, having been very carefully preserved by me, is to be given to him (Rama), while you are speaking these words and while Sugriva is listening." (21)
ēṣa cūḍāmaṇiśśrīmān mayā suparirakṣitaḥ | manaśśilāyāstilakō gaṇḍapārśvē nivēśitaḥ || 22
"This glorious cūḍāmaṇi has been very carefully guarded by me. A mark (tilaka) of manaśśilā (red pigment) was placed on her cheek by you [as a private memory]." (22)
ēṣa niryātitaśśrīmānmayā tē vāri sambhavaḥ | ētaṅ dṛṣṭvā prahṛṣyāmi vyasanē tvāmivānagha || 23
"O Rama, this glorious cūḍāmaṇi, born of the water, has been sent by me to you. Seeing this, I am greatly delighted, just as I would be by seeing you yourself in my distress." (23)
jīvitaṅ dhārayiṣyāmi māsaṅ daśarathātmaja | ūrdhvaṅ māsānna jīvēyaṅ rakṣasāṅ vaśamāgatā || 24
"O Son of Dasaratha, [she said:] 'I will sustain my life for only one month. I will not survive past that month, having fallen under the control of the Rakshasas.'" (24)
iti māmabravītsītā kṛśāṅgī dharmacāriṇī | rāvaṇāntaḥ purē ruddhā mṛgīvōtphullalōcanā || 25
"Thus spoke Sita, the auspicious one, chaste woman, who was confined in Ravana's inner palace, with wide, startled eyes like a doe's." (25)
ētadēva mayākhyātaṅ sarvaṅ rāghava yadyathā | sarvathā sāgarajalē saṅtāraḥ pravidhīyatām || 26
"O Raghava (Rama), I have reported all this to you exactly as it occurred. By all means, let the crossing of the ocean be arranged." (26)
tau jātāśvāsau rājaputrau viditvā taccābhijñānaṅ rāghavāya pradāya | dēvyā cākhyātaṅ sarvamēvānupūrvyāt vācā sampūrṇaṅ vāyuputtra śśaśaṅsa || 27
Having understood that Rama and Lakshmana were comforted, and having given that cūḍāmaṇi to Raghava, Hanuman then narrated everything that the Devi Sita had instructed, completely and in due order, through his words. (27)
