jaṁbumālivadhaḥ Slaying of Jaṁbumāli
sandiṣṭō rākṣasēndrēṇa prahastasya sutō balī | jambumālī mahādaṅṣṭrō nirjagāma dhanurdharaḥ || 1
The powerful son of Prahasta, Jambumālī, who had great tusks and was a wielder of the bow, was thus commanded by the King of the Rākṣasas (Rāvaṇa), and he set out. (1)
raktamālyāmbaradharassragvī rucirakuṇḍalaḥ | mahān vivṛttanayanaḥ caṇḍassamaradurjayaḥ || 2
He was adorned with red garlands and garments, wore shining earrings, was huge in stature, had fierce, rolling eyes, was wrathful, and was difficult to conquer in battle. (2)
dhanuśśakradhanuḥ prakhyaṅ mahadrucirasāyakam | viṣphārayāṇō vēgēna vajrāśanisamasvanam || 3
He rapidly twanged his great bow, which resembled the rainbow of Indra and carried magnificent arrows, creating a sound like thunder and a lightning strike. (3)
tasya viṣphāraghōṣēṇa dhanuṣō mahatā diśaḥ | pradiśaśca nabhaścaiva sahasā samapūryata || 4
By that great, twanging sound of his bow, the eight directions, the earth and the sky were suddenly and completely filled. (4)
rathēna kharayuktēna tamāgatamudīkṣya saḥ | hanumān vēgasampannō jaharṣa ca nanāda ca || 5
Having seen him (Jambumālī) arrive on a chariot drawn by donkeys, Hanumān, filled with swiftness and power, rejoiced and roared loudly. (5)
taṅ tōraṇaviṭaṅkasthaṅ hanumantaṅ mahākapim | jambumālī mahābāhurvivyādha niśitaiśśaraiḥ || 6
The mighty-armed Jambumālī struck that great Hanumān, who was perched on the archway's tower, with sharp arrows. (6)
ardhacandrēṇa vadanē śirasyēkēna karṇin | bāhvōrvivyādha nārācaiḥ daśabhistaṅ kapīśvaram || 7
He pierced that Hanumān on the face with a crescent-shaped arrow, on the head with one broad-headed arrow (Karṇī), and on both arms with ten iron arrows (Nārācas). (7)
tasya tacchuśubhē tāmraṅ śarēṇābhihataṅ mukham | śaradīvāmbujaṅ phullaṅ viddhaṅ bhāskararaśminā || 8
His coppery-red face, struck by the arrow, shone beautifully, like a full-blown lotus in the autumn season when touched by the rays of the sun. (8)
tattasya raktaṅ raktēna rañjitaṅ śuśubhē mukham | yathākāśē mahāpadmaṅ siktaṅ candanabindubhiḥ || 9
His face, now stained and glowing with his own blood, appeared beautiful, like a magnificent lotus sprinkled with drops of sandalwood paste, set against the sky. (9)
cukōpa bāṇābhihatō rākṣasasya mahākapiḥ | tataḥ pārśvē.tivipulāṅ dadarśa mahatīṅ śilām || 10
The great Hanuman, struck by the Rākṣasa's (Jambumālī's) arrows, became enraged. Then, he looked nearby and saw an exceedingly huge, massive rock. (10)
tarasā tāṅ samutpāṭya cikṣēpa balavadbhalī | tāṅ śarairdaśabhiḥ kruddhaḥ tāḍayāmāsa rākṣasaḥ || 11
The powerful and mighty one, Hanumān, quickly tore up that (rock) and hurled it with force. The enraged Rākṣasa (Jambumālī) then struck that very rock with ten arrows. (11)
vipannaṅ karma taddṛṣṭvā hanumāṅścaṇḍavikramaḥ | sālaṅ vipulamutpāṭya bhrāmayāmāsa vīryavān || 12
Having seen that action (the throwing of the rock and its destruction by arrows) fail, the mighty Hanumān, of fierce valor, tore up a huge Sāla tree and powerfully whirled it. (12)
bhrāmayantaṅ kapiṅ dṛṣṭvā sālavṛkṣaṅ mahābalam | cikṣēpa subahūn bāṇān jambumālī mahābalaḥ || 13
Having seen the greatly powerful Hanumān whirling the Sāla tree, the greatly powerful Jambumālī hurled many arrows. (13)
sālaṅ caturbhiścicchēda vānaraṅ pañcabhirbhujē | urasyēkēna bāṇēna daśabhistu stanāntarē || 14
He (Jambumālī) cut the Sāla tree into four pieces, struck the Hanumān on the arms with five arrows, pierced him on the chest with one arrow, and shot ten more arrows into his chest region (14)
sa śaraiḥ pūritatanu: krōdhēna mahatā vṛtaḥ | tamēva parighaṅ gṛhya bhrāmayāmāsa vēgitaḥ || 15
His body now filled with arrows and enveloped by a tremendous rage, he (Hanumān) quickly seized that very iron beam and began to whirl it. (15)
ativēgō.tivēgēna bhrāmayitvā balōtkaṭaḥ | parighaṅ pātayāmāsa jambumālērmahōrasi || 16
The greatly powerful Hanumān, having whirled the iron beam with extreme swiftness, brought it down upon the broad chest of Jambumālī. (16)
tasya caiva śirō nāsti na bāhū na ca jānunī | na dhanurna rathō nāśvāḥ tatrādṛśyanta nēṣavaḥ || 17
Due to the blow from the iron bludgeon, Jambumālī and his entire being were utterly crushed: neither his head, nor his arms, nor his knees remained, and his bow, chariot, horses, and arrows vanished entirely from sight (17)
sa hatassahasā tēna jambumālī mahābalaḥ | papāta nihatō bhūmau cūrṇitāṅgavibhūṣaṇaḥ || 18
That greatly powerful Jambumālī, suddenly slain by him, fell dead upon the ground, his body and ornaments utterly crushed. (18)
jambumāliṅ ca nihataṅ kiṅkarāṅśca mahābalān | cukrōdha rāvaṇaśśutvā kōpasaṅraktalōcanaḥ || 19
Having heard that Jambumālī and the greatly powerful Kiṅkaras had been slain, Rāvaṇa became enraged, his eyes red with fury. (19)
sa rōṣasaṅvartitatāmralōcanaḥ prahastaputtrē nihatē mahābalē | amātyaputtrānativīryavikramān samādidēśāśu niśācarēśvaraḥ || 20
When the greatly powerful son of Prahasta had been killed, the lord of the Rākṣasas (Rāvaṇa), his coppery-red eyes rolling with rage, quickly commanded the sons of his ministers, who possessed immense strength and valor. (20)
