trijaṭāsvapnaḥ Trijaṭā's Dream
ityuktāssītayā ghōraṅ rākṣasyaḥ krōdhamūrchitāḥ | kāścijjagmustadākhyātuṅ rāvaṇasya tarasvinaḥ || 1
Thus spoken to by Sītā, the fierce Rākṣasīs were overwhelmed with anger, and some of them immediately went to inform the powerful Ravana of this. (1)
tataḥ sītāmupāgamya rākṣasyō ghōradarśanāḥ | punaḥ paruṣamēkārtham anarthārthamathābruvan || 2
Then, the Rākṣasīs of terrifying appearance approached Sītā and again spoke harsh, repeated words with a cruel intent. (2)
adyēdānīṅ tavānāryē sītē pāpaviniścayē | rākṣasyō bhakṣayiṣyanti māṅsamētadyathāsukham || 3
"O lewd Sītā, whose mind is set on sin! Now, at this very moment, these Rākṣasīs will eat your flesh as they please". (3)
sītāṅ tābhiranāryābhirdṛṣṭavā santarjitāṅ tadā | rākṣasī trijaṭā vṛddhā śayānā vākyamabravīt || 4
Seeing Sītā being threatened thus by those unchaste rākṣasīs, the elderly rākṣasī Trijatā, who was lying down, spoke these words. (4)
ātmānaṅ khādatānāryā na sītāṅ bhakṣayiṣyatha | janakasya sutāmiṣṭāṅ snuṣāṅ daśarathasya ca || 5
"O wicked ones, devour yourselves, but you shall not eat Sītā, who is the beloved daughter of Janaka and the daughter-in-law of Dasharatha". (5)
svapnō hyadya mayā dṛṣṭō dāruṇō rōmaharṣaṇaḥ | rākṣasānāmabhāvāya bharturasyā bhavāya ca || 6
"I witnessed a dreadful, hair-raising dream today—it portends the downfall of the Rākṣasās and the prosperity of her husband". (6)
ēvamuktāstrijaṭayā rākṣasyaḥ krōdhamūrchitāḥ | sarvā ēvābruvanbhītāstrijaṭāṅ tāmidaṅ vacaḥ || 7
When Trijatā had spoken thus, the rākṣasīs, though faint with rage, were struck with fear and all of them spoke these words to Trijatā. (7)
kathayasva tvayā dṛṣtaḥ svapnō.yaṅ kīdṛśō niśi | tāsāṅ śrutvā tu vacanaṅ rākṣasīnāṅ mukhācyutum || 8
The rākṣasīs said, "Tell us, what kind of dream did you see during the night?" (8)
uvaca vacanaṅ kālē trijaṭā svapnasaṅśritam | gajadantamayīṅ divyāṅ śibikāmantarikṣagām || 9
Having heard these words from the rākṣasīs, Trijatā then spoke of her dream in a timely manner: "I saw the Raghava (Rāma) himself!" (9)
yuktāṅ haṅsasahasrēṇa svayamāsthāya rāghavaḥ | śuklamālyāmbaradharō lakṣmaṇēna sahāgataḥ || 10
"He was wearing white garlands and white garments and was accompanied by Lakṣmaṇa. He was ascending a divine palanquin made of ivory, which was traveling through the sky and drawn by a thousand swans". (10)
svapnē cādya mayā dṛṣṭā sītā śuklāmbarāvṛtā | sāgarēṇa parikṣiptaṅ śvētaṅ parvatamāsthitā | rāmēṇa saṅgatā sītā bhāskarēṇa prabhā yathā || 11
"In my dream, I also saw Sītā. She was clad in white garments and stood upon a white mountain encircled by the ocean. Her bond with Śrī Rāma was absolute and inseparable, like the unceasing relationship between the sun and sunlight". (11)
rāghavaśca mayā dṛṣṭaścaturdaṣṭraṅ mahāgajam || 12
ārūḍha śśailasaṅkāśaṅ cacāra sahalakṣmaṇaḥ | tatastau naraśārdūlau dīpyamānau svatējasā || 13
"I saw the Raghava (Rāma) himself, along with Lakṣmaṇa, riding a great, mountain-like elephant with four tusks and moving forward. Then, those two heroes, shining with their own brilliance and clad in white garlands and garments, came near Jānakī (Sītā)". (12-13)
śuklamālyāmbaradharau jānakīṅ paryupasthitau | tatastasya nagasyāgrē hyākāśasthasya dantinaḥ || 14
"Next, Jānakī rested upon the shoulder of that magnificent, sky-dwelling elephant, which was held by her husband (Rāma) on the mountain's peak". (14)
bhartrā parigṛhītasya jānakī skandhamāśritā |bharturaṅkātsamutpatya tataḥ kamalalōcanā || 15
candrasūryau mayā dṛṣṭā pāṇinā parimārjatī | tatastābhyāṅ kumārābhyāmāsthita: sa gajōttamaḥ | sītayā ca viśālākṣyā laṅkāyā uparisthitaḥ || 16
"After getting on the elephant, the lotus-eyed Sītā sat upon her husband's lap, and I saw her touching both the sun and the moon with her hand. Finally, that excellent elephant, bearing the two princes and the wide-eyed Sītā, was positioned high above Laṅkā". (15-16)
pāṇḍurarṣabhayuktēna rathēnāṣṭayujā svayam | ihōpayātaḥ kākutstha ssītayā saha bhāryayā || 17
"The Kākutstha (Rāma) himself arrived here with his wife Sītā in an eight-harnessed chariot drawn by white bulls". (17)
śuklamālyāṁbaradharō lakṣmaṇēna sahāgataḥ | tatō’nyatra mayā dr̥ṣṭō rāmassatyaparākramaḥ || 18
lakṣmaṇēna saha bhrātrā sītayā saha vīryavān | āruhya puṣpakaṅ divyaṅ vimānaṅ sūryasannibham || 19
"He was clad in white garlands and garments, and was accompanied by Lakṣmaṇa. Then, I saw the truth-valiant Rāma, the powerful one, with his brother Lakṣmaṇa and Sītā, ascend the divine, sun-like aerial car Puṣpaka Vimāna". (18-19)
uttarāṅ diśamālōkya jagāma puruṣōttamaḥ | ēvaṅ svapnē mayā dṛṣṭō rāmō viṣṇuparākramaḥ | lakṣmaṇēna saha bhrātrā sītayā saha bhāryayā || 20
"The best among men, Rāma, whose valor is like that of Viṣṇu, then proceeded toward the northern direction with his brother Lakṣmaṇa and his wife Sītā". (20)
na hi rāmō mahātējāśśakyō jētuṅ surāsuraiḥ | rākṣasairvāpi cānyairvā svargaḥ pāpajanairiva || 21
"The great and mighty Rāma cannot be defeated by gods, demons, rākṣasas, or anyone else, just as heaven is inaccessible to those who are sinful". (21)
samājaśca mayā dṛṣṭō gītavāditraniḥsvanaḥ | pibatāṅ raktamālyānāṅ rakṣasāṅ raktavāsasām || 36
"I saw a gathering of Rākṣasas, who were wearing red garlands and red garments and were drinking, amidst the sounds of singing and musical instruments". (36)
laṅkā cēyaṅ purī ramyā savājirathakuñjarāḥ | sāgarē patitā dṛṣṭā bhagnagōpuratōraṇā || 37
"This beautiful city of Laṅkā, with its horses, chariots, and elephants, was seen by me as having fallen into the ocean, with its main gates and arched doorways broken". (37)
laṅkā dṛṣṭā mayā svapnē rāvaṇēnābhirakṣitā | dagdhā rāmasya dūtēna vānarēṇa tarasvinā || 38
"In my dream, I saw Laṅkā—though protected by Rāvaṇa—burnt by Rāma's powerful vānara messenger". (38)
pītvā tailaṅ pranṛttāśca prahasantyō mahāsvanāḥ | laṅkāyāṅ bhasmarūkṣāyāṅ sarvā rākṣasastriyaḥ || 39
"In Laṅkā, which was rough and desolate with ashes, all the rākṣasīs were seen drinking oil, dancing, and laughing with loud roars". (39)
kumbhakarṇādayaścēmē sarvē rākṣasapuṅgavāḥ | raktaṅ nivasanaṅ gṛhya praviṣṭā gōmayahradē || 40
"And all these foremost rākṣasas, including Kumbhakarṇa, were seen in red garments and entering a pool of cow dung". (40)
apagacchata naśyadhvaṅ sītāmāpnōti rāghavaḥ | ghātayētparamāmarṣī yuṣmānsārthaṅ hi rākṣasaiḥ || 41
"Go away! Perish! Rāghava will surely reclaim Sītā. That supremely wrathful hero will annihilate you all, along with the other rākṣasas". (41)
priyāṅ bahumatāṅ bhāryāṅ vanavāsamanuvratām | bhartsitāṅ tarjitāṅ vāpi nānumaṅsyati rāghavaḥ || 42
"He will never forgive you for threatening and tormenting his beloved, highly revered wife, who faithfully followed him into the forest". (42)
tadalaṅ krūravākyaiśca sāntvamēvābhidhīyatām | abhiyācāma vaidēhīmētaddhi mama rōcatē || 43
"Stop using harsh words; let gentle words be spoken instead. We should plead with Vaidehi (Sita); this is what I believe is right". (43)
yasyāmēvaṅvidhaḥ svapnō duḥkhitāyāṅ pradṛśyatē | sā duḥkhairvividhairmuktā priyaṅ prāpnōtyanuttamam || 44
"While a woman is in distress, a dream like this indicates that she will be freed from her sorrows and attain a reunion with her beloved". (44)
bhartsitāmapi yācadhvaṅ rākṣasyaḥ kiṅ vivakṣayā | rāghavāddhi bhayaṅ ghōraṅ rākṣasānāmupasthitum || 45
"O Rākṣasīs, you have done nothing but threaten and cause her pain. Do you expect her forgiveness now? You must immediately beg her for pardon and entreat her, for a great danger has befallen all the Rākṣasas because of Śrī Rāma". (45)
praṇipātaprasannā hi maithilī janakātmajā | alamēṣā paritrātuṅ rākṣasyō mahatō bhayāt || 46
"Indeed, Sītā, the daughter of Janaka, is inclined to show mercy to those who humbly surrender. She alone is capable of saving from great and terrifying peril". (46)
api cāsyā viśālākṣyā na kiṅcidupalakṣayē | virūpamapi cāṅgēṣu susūkṣmamapi lakṣaṇam || 47
"And yet, I do not observe any signs, not even a minute or subtle one, of misfortune or a flaw on the body of this wide-eyed lady (Sītā)". (47)
chāyāvaiguṇyamātraṅ tu śaṅkē duḥkhamupasthitam | aduḥkhārhāmimāṅ dēvīṅ vaihāyasamupasthitām || 48
"I saw her in my dream seated with Śrī Rāma upon the celestial vimāna. This is an auspicious sign for her... her present visible hardships are mere shadows, not real suffering at all". (48)
arthasiddhiṅ tu vaidēhyāḥ paśyāmyahamupasthitām | rākṣasēndravināśaṅ ca vijayaṅ rāghavasya ca || 49
"I see that the fulfillment of Vaidehi's purpose is imminent, along with the destruction of the Rāvaṇa and the victory of Rāghava". (49)
nimittabhūtamētattu śrōtumasyā mahatpriyam | dṛśyatē ca sphuraccakṣuḥ padmapatramivāyatam || 50
"The throbbing of her left eye, which is wide like a lotus petal, is an auspicious sign indicating that she will very soon hear good news". (50)
īṣaccha hṛṣitō vāsyā dakṣiṇāyā hyadakṣiṇaḥ | akasmādēva vaidēhyā bāhurēkaḥ prakampatē || 51
"The slightly trembling left shoulder of this gentle Sītā Devī is also an auspicious sign". (51)
karēṇuhastapratima ssavyaścōruranuttamaḥ | vēpamānaḥ sūcayati rāghavaṅ purataḥ sthitam || 52
"The excellent left thigh (which is likened to the trunk of a female elephant) is trembling, which indicates the imminent presence of Rāghava (Rāma) before her". (52)
pakṣī ca śākhānilayaṅ praviṣṭaḥ | punaḥ punaścōttamasāntvavādī. | susvāgatāṅ vācamudīrayānaḥ punaḥ | punaścōdayatīva hṛṣṭaḥ || 53
"A bird flew to its nest on a tree branch and began to chirp repeatedly in a sweet voice... uttering words of suswagatham (good welcome) as if to announce: 'Sītā, do not be afraid! Śrī Rāma is right before you. Welcome him now'". (53)
tatassā hrīmatī bālā bharturvijayaharṣitā | avōcadyadi tattathyaṁ bhvēyaṁ śaraṇaṁ hi vaḥ || 54
Then that bashful young woman, Sītā, delighted by the victory of her husband, Rāma, replied: 'If that prophecy is true, I will indeed be a refuge and protector for you all'. (54)
ityārśe śrīmadramāyaṇe vālmīkīye ādikāvye suṃdarakaṃde saptaviṁśassargaḥ
